The University of North Alabama is embarking on major upgrades to its athletic and campus facilities, enhancing students' experience and community engagement, with construction in full swing for a new on-campus stadium, baseball field, and more. The university aims to create a more accessible and premium environment for fans and students. Ben Bond, General Manager of Ticket Sales and Operations, highlighted the value of maintaining free student admission and generating revenue through new event-hosting opportunities. Ryan Adams, Coordinator of Athletic Facilities & Events, highlighted these developments' impact, from improving tailgating experiences to boosting the competitive edge of the university's athletic programs.

Ben Bond discussed exciting developments for the athletic program, focusing on enhancing the fan experience with more premium seating options and better accessibility through a 360-degree concourse. He emphasized the importance of providing free tickets to students, as supported by President Kitts, to ensure that students continue to feel valued. Bond highlighted the fundraising efforts that support athletics, noting that they currently miss out on concession revenue from Braly Stadium. The new stadium will allow for hosting a variety of events, such as concerts, which will financially benefit both athletics and the university. Additionally, he addressed parking challenges from a 2021 study, mentioning plans for improved tailgating options and revenue, as well as upgrades to the new baseball field with turf to reduce game cancellations. The new design aims to streamline entry points and enhance the flow of fans entering the stadium.
Ryan Adams shared his thoughts on how the new on-campus stadium will better integrate athletics with the university and the Florence community. He envisions opportunities for tailgating and events that can draw people together, benefiting everyone involved. Adams spoke about planned renovations to various athletic facilities, including a modern new baseball field, which will help the campus stand out compared to other schools in their conference. He also highlighted the progress of the athletic programs since the arrival of Josh Looney, UNA’s athletic director. Adams believes it's time to recognize the hard work of the athletes, and closed his interview stating, “There’s a reason we built a new trophy case”.
Some of the specific upgrades coming with the new stadium are the massive upgrade in seating options for our fans, students, and opponents with full access to 360-degree concourse design. Additionally, the new stadium will feature 13 in-suite boxes and a clubhouse section for premium fans. The stadium is also to be more than just hosting at-home football games. The possibilities for hosting events are endless, and the athletic department is eager to utilize the new space for concerts, community events, and other activities that will bring in further revenue and publicity for the university. With state-of-the-art facilities and versatile seating options, the new stadium will become a hub for entertainment and engagement beyond just football games. The department also intends to renovate the lobby of Flowers Hall in hopes of creating a more professional atmosphere for fans and students to experience. Now, as a Division 1 school, athletically winning our first D1 game invokes a new trophy display cabinet.
The project began its design phase in June 2023 with a public announcement at the UNA turf practice field. By December 2023, UNA partnered with HPM and Davis Architects for project management and design. In March 2024, the Board of Trustees approved an early construction package for a multi-purpose turf practice field at Cox Creek Park. An early bid package was also released for the baseball stadium design and groundwork at the Bank Independent Stadium site. On June 14, the Board approved the project’s design, scope, timeline, and budget, allowing for groundbreaking. A final bid package began in September 2024, with the potential for the facility to open in the 2026-2027 season. Furthermore, the new complex will open up many opportunities— from hosting larger events and concerts to improved revenue from concessions and parking. The state-of-the-art baseball field will not only reduce game cancellations but will also attract major programs, elevating our competitive stature.
Bank Independent Stadium has an estimated base cost of $65 million, with additional options and enhancements available if substantial donations are received. The next five months present a crucial opportunity for donors to impact the project significantly through their contributions. So far, UNA has raised $25 million through the Shine On, Gold comprehensive campaign. The goal of $30 million for the Bank Independent Stadium campaign is expected to exceed the goal amount.

Construction progress as of October 20th, 2024
In conclusion, the new football and baseball complex at our college represents a significant step forward in enhancing the overall experience for students, fans, and the wider community. With premium seating options, a 360-degree concourse, and a commitment to keeping student tickets free, this facility prioritizes accessibility and inclusivity. It addresses misconceptions about athletics receiving undue advantages by highlighting our extensive fundraising efforts and community engagement.
